The Registrsr of Nottingham Uni visits TLC - and brings Good News!
Last Tuesday we were delighted that Paul Greatrix, the new registrar
at Nottingham University responded to our invitation to look round
The Lenton Centre. He remembered coming as a user to the Community
Centre rooms many years ago. He noticed the big difference in the
building now, and was interested in all that we are doing. From
the beginning, the University has supported us well, and at the
end of his visit, Paul was able to give us the good news that the
University would be donating £5,000 a quarter to help our efforts
over he next year.

JEAN JEFFREY - COMMUNITY CHAMPION!
Recently, a competition was held by the "Evening Post" to honour
community champions - people who had devoted outstanding time and
love to their communities. Jean Jeffrey who is very well known for
leading the friendly little "Parent and Children's Group" at Thomas
Helwys Baptist Church, and for her many years as a foster carer,
was nominated. Many people in the community were really happy to
vote for Jean, and she received so many votes that she was awarded
the prestigious title of "Community Champion".
The Lenton Centre also benefited from this award, as community
champions were invited to nominate a charity of their choice to
receive £1000. Jean chose TLC. Thank you Jean! As well as feeling
highly honoured, we are very pleased to be able to put this sum
towards getting that pool open!

Maid Marion Mile
Had you found yourself wandering near the Goosefair
site on the evening of the 21st June, you would have been met by
the bizarre sight of 160 enthusiastic runners all limbering up in
preparation for the Maid Marion Mile relay race. They had to be
enthusiastic, considering the fact that typical Wimbledon weather
has once again graced us, opening the heavens just enough before
the race to sufficiently saturate every participant.
|
|
The event was organised by Perfect Motion, a Nottingham
based company devoted to promoting health, performance and fitness
across the city by organising and sponsoring events such as races
and team competitions in a wide range of sporting activities
|

|
|
Taking part in the Maid Marion Mile were 40 teams
of 4 from all over the city. Each team was given the job of recruiting
their own sponsors for the race, the money raised going to their
own cause. Running for The Lenton Centre was the reckonable quartet
of James Dunkley, Alison Towner, Ruth Harvey (right) and Carl Towner.
The first champion for the centre was James, setting the group's
pace at a notable 5 minutes 47 seconds for the first mile. Amidst
rain muffled cheers from the mass of umbrellas that was the spectators,
the second runner, Alison, completed her mile in 6 minutes 55 seconds,
and tagged Ruth for the third mile, concluded after a dignified
7 minutes 15 second sprint. Then it was down to our last champion,
Carl, to charge the fourth and final mile matching James' effort
at 5 minutes 47 again. Incidentally, Carl's quote of the event was
a very professional groan of pain whilst 'enjoying' a pre race sports
massage.
The total time for the TLC Tearaways was an impressive 4 miles in
25 minutes 44 seconds, missing out on the top ten by a mere 12 seconds
but winning first place in the category of mixed teams! With sponsor
money coming in to be used for developing the centre, aswell as
the aches, must mean some good's been done, it was no doubt an experience
worth the wetness. Congratulations to the team, and thank you to
all those that sponsored them.
And, if you didn't manage to get your pledge down in time and are
now thinking, "Oh my, I do wish I could be part of this extraordinary
and worthwhile happening", please don't fret; there's still time.
Belated sponsors are still being accepted and will be for the foreseeable
future, so just get down to the TLC Reception for details of how
you can do your bit - without having to run a mile in the rain!

I love Lenton - art competition
|
|
"I love Lenton" is the message proclaimed on the winning T- shirt
designed by Savannah Booth of Edna G. Olds Primary School and entered
in The Lenton Centre's Christmas Party competition.
|
|
The winner in the older age group was Haleema Sadia.
Children from Lenton Primary School were invited to design mugs,
and the winners were Petra Taylor, and Bita Ysalkdeh, both with
lovely colourful designs. It was very difficult to choose winners
from the designs received because they all showed such talent. Thanks
to all of you who entered!
